Pantomime: The legend of Nuredduna

Fila Zero Teatre presents their new work of pantomime "The legend of Nuredduna", adaptation of the epic poem "La Deixa del geni grec"(1900) -The legacy of the Greek Genius- by the writer and cleric Miquel Costa i Llobera (Pollença, 1854 – Palma, 1922), who set many passages of his famous poem in the Talaiotic settlement of Ses Païsses.

"The legacy of the Greek Genius"

The poem is an epic work on the subject of Majorcan prehistory.

The leading character is Nuredduna, the granddaughter of the High Priest and oracle of the tribe that lived in Ses Païsses.

According to the author himself, the action of the poem takes place in the proto-historic period, when the first expeditions of colonists were arriving on the island.

The poem is an idealised re-creation of Majorcan prehistory, representing the unity of the island, personified by Nuredduna, with the spirit of Greek civilisation represented by the lyre of Melisigen, a Homeric image.

Awarded in the Floral Games of Barcelona (1902), it was made into an opera (1947) called "Nuredduna", with a libretto written by Miquel Forteza (1888 - 1969) and music by Antoni Massana (1890 - 1966).

"The legacy of the Greek Genius": a summary of the plot.

The tribe of the holm oak wish to make a sacrifice to their gods of some travellers who have dared to leave their Greek ship anchored on the coastline, and to explore the island.

Melisigen, assisted by his lyre, sings his final, mortal farewell. His rhapsodic voice stills the ritual cries of the tribe and fills the heart of Nuredduna -the virgin oracle- with light. She reclaims this prisoner as a sacred victim of the god of the cave.

Melisigen is abandoned in the depths of the Caves of Artà, but at night Nuredduna frees him, because she has received a message of love from him that only she has seen, and which means that he deserves to go on living.

When the cruellest members of the tribe who have mistrusted the oracle's sudden change of mind, ask her to show them the prisoner, she dismisses them as bloodthirsty and reveals to them what she has learnt from the song of Melisigen.

Furious, they stone Nuredduna, who takes refuge in the cave, and finds the lyre which the poet has left there, and embraces it so as to die comforted by the poetry which has stirred her so.

"For a beat of the anguish with which your heart expires, we would give all of our centuries of tranquillity", so the water maidens sing to her as they gather in their arms her pure soul, martyr of an age that was yet to dawn...
