Description of itinerary

This walk coincides almost completely with the path followed by the Gran Route produced by the Council of Mallorca (GR 222). This covers nearly 102 km and joins the north-east of Mallorca with the Lluc Sanctuary, crossing a large part of the island. However, this walk only includes the municipality of Artà and ends during the early stages of the Gran Route, at Colònia de Sant Pere. Work is currently being carried out to repair and signpost the paths that form part of the Gran Route and, so far, the section between S’Arenalet des Verger and Betlem has been completed.
This is a very attractive walk from a heritage point of view as it allows visitors to get to know some of the area's ethnographic sights, such as the old oil mills and water wheels, as well as old water and defence towers (the Albarca or Matzocs tower) and also catalogued archaeological remains, such as the dolmen of S’Aigua Dolça.
The walk starts in the centre of Artà, heading in the direction of Coll del Racó. We go through the public estate of Sa Duaia in the direction of Cala Torta cove, passing by the stream of Ses Voltes and skirting along the coast until reaching S’Arenalet del Verger. If you want, you can take a break at the refuge of S’Arenalet. The walk can end here, returning along the same path for those who prefer a circular route.
Going on, the second part of the walk starts at the refuge of S’Arenalet and goes along the path of Mondoi, later linking up with the Prisoners' Path and reaching the Houses of S’Alqueria Vella. We then take the path of the Establits de S’Alqueria, which leads to the Betlem hermitage, from where we head once again towards the sea, to enjoy a wonderful walk along the coast while approaching our destination: Colònia de Sant Pere.
This route has been taken from the collection of excursions prepared and published by the hiking group "Un raig d’Artanencs".
